Welcome to the Friends of Pyrethrum website. Friends of Pyrethrum Ltd NEW PRODUCT - see below! Towards the end of the 19th Century the insecticidal properties of pyrethrum was recognised. Originally called 'Dalmation Insect Powder' it was widely available in European pharmacies and consisted of ground pyrethrum flowers (Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium) grown in Dalmatia (now Yugoslavia). Since then the growing of pyrethrum flowers has expanded to include many countries. Although at the end of the 20th Century the primary producers were Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Tasmania and Papua New Guinea. During the 20th Century higher yielding vareties of pyrethrum flower were developed as well as improving the extraction and refining methods. Recent develpmental work, primarilly in Tasmania, has seen the introduction of refining using carbon dioxide in a super-critical-fluid extraction procedure. Pyrethrum extract has, therefore, been widely used for a considerable time which together with its low toxicity means that it is also an insecticide for the 21st Century. This claim is further enhanced by the fact that it is one of the very few insecticides permitted for use by the Soil Association (UK) on organic farms. This website contains information on the history, development and toxicity of this unique insecticide. In addition to this website the primary source of information on pyrethrum is the monograph published in 1995 which was edited by John E Casida and Gary B Quistad. Details of the monograph are found below. 'Friends of Pyrethrum' is a group of individuals and companies who have an interest in seeing that development and use of pyrethrum continues into the 21st Century. |
